NGF Urges Unity in Combating Banditry, Extends Condolences to Plateau and Zamfara States

President Bola Tinubu has called on governors across party lines to nominate capable individuals for appointment into Boards of government parastatals. This directive was disclosed in a communique issued by the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, after an emergency meeting of the Forum on Tuesday.

The President’s decision follows his earlier directive on June 19, which called for the immediate dissolution of Governing Boards of all Federal Government parastatals, agencies, institutions, and government-owned companies. However, Boards, Commissions, and Councils listed in the Third Schedule, Part 1 Section 153 (i) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria were exempted from the dissolution.

Governor AbdulRazaq expressed the Forum’s appreciation for President Tinubu’s leadership in extending this opportunity to governors across party lines, enabling them to nominate competent individuals for appointment into parastatal boards. This move demonstrates a commitment to inclusive governance and the utilization of diverse expertise for the betterment of Nigeria.

During the emergency meeting, the governors were briefed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on the widespread flooding across the country. In response, the governors resolved to collaborate with relevant agencies to develop a robust and coordinated response aimed at saving lives, protecting livelihoods, and preserving critical infrastructure.

To achieve these objectives, the governors emphasized the importance of establishing functional State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), and community volunteers. They highlighted the need for these bodies to have adequate legal backing, funding, and trained manpower to effectively respond to emergencies.

Furthermore, the governors stressed the significance of private sector participation in disaster relief efforts, urging companies to fulfill their corporate social responsibility by contributing to these initiatives. They emphasized the importance of policy alignment, community engagement, and gender inclusivity in effective disaster risk reduction.

In addition to the discussions on flooding and disaster management, the governors received United Nations Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai. Malala underscored the need to address gender discrimination and promote girl-child education. The NGF expressed their commitment to advancing gender inclusivity and empowering girls through education, and pledged to collaborate with the UN and the Malala Fund to achieve these goals.

Lastly, the governors extended their condolences to the governors of Plateau and Zamfara States for the ongoing violence in their regions. They emphasized the importance of collective efforts in combating banditry across the country and maintaining peace and security.

With President Tinubu’s call for competent nominations to parastatal boards, combined with the governors’ commitment to disaster management and gender inclusivity, Nigeria moves forward in its pursuit of effective governance and national development.
