Nigeria’s Alarming Rate of Failed Projects Sparks Concern

1 min read

The State of Project Management in Nigeria
According to APPMON, the situation has become so dire that Nigeria has earned the unfortunate reputation of being a “project management graveyard” due to the prevalence of abandoned projects, cost overruns, and policy inconsistencies. The staggering loss of trillions to failed or abandoned projects underscores the urgency of the situation.

A New Initiative to Address Project Abandonment
In response to this growing concern, APPMON has launched the APPPMON Body of Knowledge and Innovation (ABOKI). This initiative aims to tackle the issue of failed projects head-on and provide a homegrown solution to Nigeria’s project management challenges. ABOKI is a product of research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and expertise in various fields.

The NDDC’s alleged abandonment of over 1,300 projects in the Niger Delta region highlights the severity of the issue. This region has long struggled with underdevelopment, poverty, and environmental degradation, despite being rich in natural resources. The NDDC’s mandate to promote sustainable development and implement projects in infrastructure, human capital, and other areas remains unfulfilled.

APPMON’s lead editor, Dr. Inemi Erete Stephen, emphasized the need for a change in the narrative of failed projects in Nigeria. ABOKI seeks to promote sustainable development and address the root causes of project abandonment. With the launch of this initiative, APPMON hopes to stem the tide of failed projects and foster a more sustainable development trajectory for the country.
