The Kwara State Government has issued an urgent public alert, warning of imminent heavy rainfall, lightning, and thunderstorms expected to begin today, Wednesday, July 30, based on forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
In a statement released by the Director of Public Orientation at the Ministry of Communications, Mr. Agboola Olarewaju, the government advised residents, especially those living near river banks or in low-lying flood-prone areas, to relocate immediately to safer ground to prevent potential loss of lives and property.
“This is a proactive measure to mitigate the anticipated impact of the heavy downpour. Citizens are also advised to stay indoors during rainfall and avoid unnecessary movement,” the statement read.
Additionally, residents were strongly urged to unplug electrical appliances when stepping out, to guard against thunder-related damages or power surges.
To combat the risk of flooding, the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led administration has commenced the dredging of the Asa River and intensified the clearing of drainages across Ilorin and surrounding areas.
“The government is committed to the safety and comfort of all Kwarans, and we call on citizens to support ongoing efforts to protect our communities,” the statement concluded.
The Kwara State Government calls for maximum cooperation from the public in observing these safety guidelines and reporting any emergency to appropriate authorities.
