1 min read

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested 127 individuals suspected of internet fraud at two nightclubs in Akure, Ondo State. The raid, which occurred on June 8, 2024, resulted in the seizure of various items, including cars, laptops, and phones.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with EFCC operatives tear-gassing and beating people, regardless of their status. Several individuals, including security personnel, were injured as tear gas canisters were shot inside one of the clubs.

The operation, which aimed to crack down on internet fraud, has sparked controversy, with some questioning the excessive force used by the EFCC. The commission has yet to comment on the allegations.

The arrested suspects are currently being held at the EFCC’s office in Akure, awaiting further investigation and potential charges. The raid serves as a warning to those involved in cybercrime, as the EFCC intensifies its efforts to combat fraud in the country.
