BREAKING: Governor Killed In His Office

1 min read

Governor Mohammad Dawood Muzammil, the Taliban governor of Afghanistan’s northern Balkh province, was killed in an explosion in his office.

According to AFP, Muzammil was the most senior official killed since the Taliban retook power in 2021.

Since then, violence has decreased significantly, but prominent pro-Taliban figures and others have been killed in a series of attacks, many of which have been claimed by the Islamic State.

The cause of the latest blast was unknown, according to local police, and there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The governor, however, was “martyred in an explosion by the enemies of Islam,” according to Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid on Twitter.

He also stated that an investigation will be launched to determine the reason for the attack and those responsible.

Muzammil is said to have led the fight against Islamic State militants while governor of the eastern province of Nangarhar. He was transferred to Balkh in October of last year.

The explosion happened “around 9am… inside the second floor of the governor’s office,” according to Balkh police spokesperson Mohammed Asif Waziri.

According to police, at least one other person was killed in the attack. A number of other people are said to have been hurt.

“There was a bang. I fell on the ground,” Khairuddin, who was wounded in the blast, told AFP. He said he had seen a friend lose a hand in the explosion.

According to him, the explosion occurred shortly after the governor arrived in his office.
