Benue Massacre: Military Launches Air Surveillance as IGP Assumes Control of State Security

1 min read

The military on Sunday deployed air surveillance over Makurdi, Benue State, and its environs following the deadly attacks on Saturday in Yelwata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of the state.

One of our correspondents observed military aircraft hovering over the capital city and neighbouring local government areas such as Guma and Gwer West throughout Sunday.

A military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, said the surveillance operation was aimed at closely monitoring the situation.

“The air surveillance is to assess the security situation around Makurdi and nearby areas so we can respond swiftly and effectively. Residents should not panic—the military is fully in control,” the officer stated.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has assumed direct control of security operations in the state.

No fewer than 100 people were reportedly killed and several others injured when terrorists attacked the affected communities on Saturday.
